So a new Facebook snafu has surfaced, and it continues to show Facebook’s disinterest in following the Google mantra of “don’t be evil.” In fact, if Facebook has shown us anything over the last few years its that they are interested in providing a comprehensive online community as long as they can then exploit that community. Exhibit A) Beacon. Exhibit B) Terms of Use/Photo rights, Exhibit C) http://snipurl.com/nft7e . I have often wondered where the photos for the “singles advertisements” come from as they look candid and probably ripped from the photo albums of unsuspecting hotties. As it turns out that’s precisely what they are. Think it can’t happen to you? Just ask consultant Cheryl Smith, that’s MRS. Cheryl Smith, who recently found herself whored out by Facebook for just such a singles advertisement. Imagine her husband’s surprise. Thankfully it’s easy to remedy, just go to Settings > Privacy > News Feed and Wall > Facebook Ads > Appearance in Facebook Ads > Select NO ONE. I’m glad to see that FB has learned from it’s previous mistakes of sheisting its community by making this exploitation optional, but the fact that it is automatically set to “Exploit” and leaves it to you discover that you’re photos have been whored out by Facebook for profit suggests to me the ability to opt out was an after thought, a way to cover their asses lest their community wake up again and demand answers.
